If you're an engineer you'll love this. SO. GOOD. As an engineer, I found this book to be fascinating. It's basically a narrative about several skunk works projects like the U-2 and F117 interspersed with tons of insane and interesting side stories by people involved (mostly test pilots).Here's one example. One engineer was formulating a new fuel for the U-2 that would work in the high altitude engine. The fuel was called LF something or other, and there was a running joke that that stood for "Lighter Fluid" due to it's awful smell. Chemically it was actually more similar to one of the main ingredients in the bug spray "Flit", which was popular at the time. The year they put the (still very top-secret) U2 into service, there was an unexplained nationwide shortage of bug-spray.Practical Management Tips Mr. Rich gives a unique perspective on the legendary Lockheed Martin Skunkworks and it's equally legendary manager. From the narrative you get a really good feel for the culture of the place and why it was so successful. My goal in reading this book was to get practical tips for building successful teams and I think I got some ideas:(1) Eliminate bureaucracy(2) Prefer having a small with high average talent to a larger less talented team(3) Make sure different functions are physically next to each and communicate incessantly(4) Shield the team from external pressure(5) Challenge the team with "impossible" problems that get talented people excited.These are all things that can help a small talented team far outperform a larger team with a much bigger budget.Top secret and stealth technology. The "Skunk Works" did it all. "Skunk Works" is the popular moniker of Lockheed Martin's top, top secret aircraft aircraft program for the US government. This book is written by the second director of this program, Ben Rich. The book's primary focus is the U-2, F-117A, and last but not least the SR-71. A ship for the Navy, and a drone program are briefly covered also. Ben Rich is credited for developing and building "stealth" into military assets. Primarily aircraft. After Francis Gary Powers was shot down piloting a U-2 over Soviet Russia, it quickly became apparent that a faster, higher flying and stealthy aircraft was needed. Hence the SR-71. It can travel in the atmosphere at a height of nearly 90,000 feet. It can cruise at well over Mach 3, and has a Radar profile of about a ball-bearing (thus "Stealthy"). This book is fascinating and gives you a first-person account of these extraordinary aircraft. The F-117 flew over the center of Baghdad, without fighter escorts; and dropped 2,000 lb. bombs during the Iraq war. The U-2 is the only one out of the three that is still flying missions. As a matter of fact, a U-2 just recently crashed in California.

Beautiful fluid pouring and painting The book "Fluid Pouring and Painting Project book" is a beautifully written and illustrated on a type of art I know nothing about but am fascinated with.Fluid pouring and painting is gorgeous, and can be applied to flat as well as three dimensional surfaces. The author Jane Monteith took months to create this book-in the afterward, she discusses using hundreds of process photos while doing the projects primarily by herself-a mean feat if there ever is one. And the projects are incredible. Fluid art can be manipulated a number of ways to make it useable on different surfaces. At first the author does primarily paintings and collages and then branches off into using and making the molds for this type of art for lamp shades, boxes, cups, etc.This is fascinating. I've seen the results of fluid art but I did not know how or any way to do it before. I do feel this is not a book for beginners in doing fluid projects-some of the descriptions are too detailed, and too hard for the beginner. But for someone who has a crafty background and is already some type of paint artist this might be the way to start. For the rest of us, this will be challenging, messy but worth your time. It does look like you will need space to do this art, so if you live in a dorm or a small studio one bedroom apartment this might not be for you.My Husband is crafty, and we've done various art projects together over the years. We can't wait to try this one together. A beautiful book all in all and very helpful.Fun project ideas, great instruction This book is full of great ideas for diy projects and gifts. I am impressed by the variety of painting projects included, some are a little more complex and time consuming while others are a little more simple. I like that this book fuels my creativity for projects I have had in mind. There are some very useful tips on when/how to use a variety of different materials to get the right texture and flow that I want. The instructions are easy to follow and implement and I like that there are lots of pictures included to follow along with as well, it has helped me a lot having the pictures to look at.Overall I am happy with this book. It came just in time for holiday projects and gifts. Changed my whole view on parenting! I had been a frequent visitor to Janet's Facebook group, and always felt a connection to the type of parenting she describes. Through blogging, I have been trying the past couple years to come up with a type of parenting that encourages critical thinking an emotional intelligence. I strongly believe that teaching a child to think for himself/herself is the best gift we can give them. And Janet's philosophy hit the nail on the head for many aspects I was just stumped on how to approach.While I had read many of the relevant articles on her Website, Janet suggested that I read this book because it gives an overview of RIE parenting (I love how personal and engaged she is on Facebook!) even though I have a 3-year-old. Most of the book is geared more toward young infants, but the second half of the book is more about toddler discipline. While yes, you can just read the articles on Janet's Website, I still strongly recommend the book because it moves in a very linear fashion and makes a lot more sense than reading a hodgepodge of articles in no particular order (or just the ones you think are relevant to your situation). I feel anybody would be missing out on the whole picture by skipping this book.The biggest benefit my son and I have gotten from this book is a better and more present relationship- I enjoy his company so much more and when I am with him I am much more focused on the moment. When he was 2 and much easier to distract and keep busy by exploring the house, I had everything under control- dishes were always done, clothes were always washed, dried and put away, and his 7 p.m. bedtime gave me plenty of "me time" to recharge my batteries at the end of the day. Once he turned 3, however, I had almost no time to myself. I was drained every day, he needed constant attention and wanted me to play with him rather than keeping himself busy for a few minutes while I cooked dinner. Bedtime had somehow become 9:30pm instead of 7, and by the time he was finally in bed, I myself went to sleep shortly thereafter. I was unhappy, distracted, and I was having a hard time enjoying his presence much of the time (don't get me wrong, I do love him dearly!). We were both unhappy as a result of all of this, actually.One of the last chapters in the book talked about self-care and setting/enforcing boundaries. Something just clicked in my head and I realized this was the reason we were both so unhappy. My son needed me to be present - even if it was for short but intense periods of time - and I needed time to recharge on my own. That night, I told him my expectations ahead of time (as Janet suggests throughout the book) and guided him through our bedtime routine. Of course, he resisted and wanted to keep playing with his toys. Whereas I would have usually waited until he as "ready" to avoid a meltdown right before bedtime, I repeated myself once and when he resisted again, I walked to him and took his hand saying "You're having a hard time with putting your toys down to get ready for bed, so I am going to help you." He wasn't too happy at first, but about 10 seconds into the walk to the bathroom he stopped his fussing and actually opened his mouth for me to help brush his teeth. We followed the same procedure for bedtime, and though there were a few hiccups, everything just seemed so much more peaceful. He was in bed by 7:30 that night, and I had plenty of time to myself. We both woke up refreshed and it was probably the best, smoothest morning we'd ever had.I know this is just the beginning of a journey for us, but Janet has changed my entire outlook on parenting my son and has given me so much hope for the future. I definitely recommend it - and it's such a quick read that even those with only a few short minutes between tantrums can finish it!
