I dipped my toe into the superfood waters with Ms. Morris’s Superfood Smoothies and that is where I found my love of superfoods! Thanks to and some other fine online retailers, along with my local Whole Foods Market, I’ve been able to stock my superfood pantry with ease. Handing over the hundreds of dollars at the checkout stand for these wonderful little powders and potions wasn’t so easy (I bought a lot of them at once, because I really wanted to be able to utilize every recipe in that book ASAP), but Ms. Morris is absolutely correct – these little puppies are potent so you only need a little bit, which means they last for a very long time. Between the two of us, my boyfriend and I have about 3 total smoothies a day (one for me in the morning, 2 or more for him during the day) and we’ve had to restock the superfood supplies less than I originally anticipated. And because we both feel so much better, more energy, uplifted mood, we feel the expense is worth it. We also buy only organic, so that guarantees the food bill is higher anyway. Sigh.
But I digress. I said all of the above because as soon as I saw this cookbook had hit the stores I didn’t hesitate to buy it because I knew this time I would already have most of the ingredients on hand. I’ve already devoured the introduction portion of this book (like what I did there?) and learned more about the superfoods I’d already been introduced to in Superfood Smoothies, plus some new ones.
I am very excited about the recipes in this book. My boyfriend is ALWAYS hungry, and since both of us are gluten intolerant and I am a strict vegetarian, I am always looking for ways to have healthy and delicious snacks around the house that we can imbibe in whenever the mood strikes.
This is the first book by Julie Morris that I’ve bought, so I wasn’t sure what to expect — but I’ve made four things already, and each of them has been incredibly delicious!
I ordered this book because I have several bags of various superfoods in my pantry that I’ve bought either because a cooking class I’ve taken or a recipe I’ve previously made has called for a particular ingredient — but then that ingredient just sits there since I have nothing else to use it for (I’m looking at you especially, lacuma powder!). This book has given me a reason to bust out those bags that have been hiding in my pantry for too long and to put them to good use.
I also love the fact that this book focuses on snacks since, like the author, I’m a grazer, and love to snack on small nibbles throughout the day. Since all of the recipes are whole-foods and plant-based/vegan and use superfoods to pack in healthy nutrition, I know I’ll be getting quality food with these treats.
Every recipe in here looks amazing. When I first get a new cookbook, I like to savor it it by slowly reading through the recipes and marking the ones that I want to try first. After reading this one, I had to laugh because I had marked practically every page with a Post-It. The flavor combos range from traditional (things like Salted Almond Chocolate Bark and Secret Mint Chip Ice Cream) to more daring (like the Butterscotch-Hemp Crispy Rice Treats and Curried Coconut Kale Chips).
Because most of the recipes in this book require simple ingredients (besides the superfoods, of course) that you probably already have on hand, it’s easy to whip up things really easily.
